Hockey fans shook after Jakob Chychrun’s ‘ancestral diet’ details go viral

Hockey fans were shocked and, frankly, a little shocked to learn details about Ottawa Senators defenseman Jakob Chychrun’s extreme diet, which includes things like “eating raw liver” and “raw beef heart.”

Bleacher Report Open Ice gets new attention to a discussion that actually took place in December when Chychrun was still with the Arizona Coyotes. Here is the full quote from Chychrun gifted to Craig Morgan of PHNX at the end of 2022.

“Guys think I’m crazy. My family thinks I’m crazy. My girlfriend thinks I’m crazy” Chichrun said.

“It’s a lot of protein and I don’t eat carbs. On game days I eat some sweet potatoes, some white rice, some fruit, but I try to eat all my dairy products raw. it’s like an ancestral lifestyle and I also eat raw liver, raw beef heart, do all these crazy things. The taste is terrible, but your body almost craves it when you eat it all the time because it’s so nutritionally dense.”

In many responses, 24-year-old Chichran is portrayed as a potential zombie in The Last of Us.

Some of the answers were not just funny, they also may have been informative. It appears that Chikran may have been inspired (directly or indirectly) by online influencer Brian Johnson, also known as “The Liver King”.

As the New York Post notes“Liver King” confessed to lying about his steroid use in early Decemberand is facing a $25 million class action lawsuit. The lawsuit accuses Johnson of promoting a “dangerous and life-threatening diet” that causes people to suffer severe foodborne illnesses.

Chychrun, other NHL players probably need expert advice

Whether Chichran got his dietary information from The Liver King or somewhere else, it’s the kind of situation that can stop being quirky and funny if the tall quarterback falls ill due to food poisoning.

To be fair, Chichran’s (raw) heart is in the right place. Known as the beast in the gymbut also a player who has serious injury problems, he probably wants to optimize more than anything else.

Maybe he just needs to get advice from an expert? Toronto Maple Leafs most recently became the first team in the NHL to hire a full-time nutritionist., and there seems to be a storyline in every other off-season where the player apparently finds that they should probably eat more fruits and vegetables. Smarter teams are investing in this area, so hopefully the senators have already given Chichran a pamphlet or two on the dangers of consuming raw…organs?

For all the ridicule that Nathan McKinnon received for his fanatical dietat least his eating habits are not straight out of a troubled scene from “Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom”.
