The NHL trade deadline is a time for contenders to improve themselves, contenders to fool themselves, and those who have lost seasons to prepare for the future.
But there’s one problem that all of these teams face, according to Brian Burke, and that’s the math problem.
“I just re-contacted the NHL and they’ve only handed out one Stanley Cup so far,” said Burke, a longtime NHL general manager and now president of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“It’s a timing problem. The math doesn’t work. There is only one parade, but anywhere up to 18 teams will get better by trying to win the Cup, win the round, or whatever their goals are. the math doesn’t work and you overpay. There are more mistakes made at a deal deadline than the rest of the year.”
The key to the NHL trade deadline is to mitigate those mistakes. After speaking with Burke and others, here are 10 rules that front offices should follow in a deadline.
