The former UFC heavyweight champion lost to Yorgan De Castro on Friday night at Eagle FC 47 in a fight he likely won before a third-round shoulder injury left him unable to continue. It was another bad break for dos Santos, who was out of the UFC for the first time since 2008 and has now lost five fights in a row.

Dos Santos addressed a difficult weekend setback by posting on social media explaining that his shoulder was now “back in place” and that he felt better in the cage against de Castro than he had “in a long, long time.”

“My shoulder is back in place,” Dos Santos wrote on Instagram. “In this position, I do not feel pain. I have already spoken with my doctor, we will do some examinations and find out what procedures will be in order to recover as soon as possible. But before going to bed I would like to share with you guys that I felt so happy. I felt really good during the fight, like I haven’t felt in a very, very long time.”

Despite the injury, dos Santos received widespread praise from his new promoter, Eagle FC president Khabib Nurmagomedov, who described the Brazilian as “amazing looking” before the unfortunate turn of events. After the fight, Nurmagomedov said that he thought a potential fight against Fedor Emelianenko via Bellator MMA was “still viable” despite the dos Santos loss, and that he would like to fight in late 2022.

Nurmagomedov said he will meet with Bellator president Scott Cocker next week to discuss a potential fight between the heavyweight legends.

Dos Santos’ full statement after the fight can be read and viewed below.

“Hey guys, I’m already home. I took a shower, had dinner, now I’m ready to get some rest. My shoulder is back. In this position, I do not feel any pain. I have already spoken with my doctor, we will do some examinations and find out what procedures will be in order to recover as soon as possible. But before going to bed I would like to share with you guys that I felt so happy. I felt really good during the fight, like I haven’t felt in a very, very long time. And it was good. It was good because I was able to do everything I worked for. The hard work we put in in the gym got me into the octagon on fight day and we were doing well until we got this injury.”
