Matt Harmon and Charles McDonald of Sportzshala Sports discuss the immediate impact of Patrick Mahomes’ play since he became the Chiefs’ starting QB in 2018.
Video transcript
– Let’s talk about Kansas City here real quick before we leave here. I think this is another team that has exceeded many expectations, which is strange. But I mean, how many times have you seen the AFC West division preview and it was like the Chiefs finished fourth in their division. They trade Tyreke Hill. Well, it was simply the best passing offense in the NFL this year.
– Yes, that’s why I was able to do the dumbest take of all time.
– Greatest welcome of all time.
– This is the best stupid take ever. Patrick Mahomes is the most underrated player in football because I… first of all, I just had this double because the top 100 in the NFL came out and he was like number eight. And I thought it was too low. It’s too low.
– [INAUDIBLE]
– At the time it was like he could be 1 or he could be 2. And the other could be Aaron Donald. Like–
– Yeah.
– –that’s all. It’s those… at the beginning of the season it was those two guys. And I just felt like people really underestimate how much better Patrick Mahomes is than any other quarterback in the league. And this year, I don’t think there’s a better proof than what he did this year.
I mean, just burned the league to the ground again. Tyreke Hill is out.
Travis Kels was still great, but when you look at their widest range, they didn’t have a truly dominant number one guy like they did with Tyreke. And the hardest part about losing someone like Tyreek is that now there is a purpose. Like, he saw the same quarterback, he still has a lot of the same chips, but Tyreke is gone.
So the other guys have to move on the fly, because every time Patrick Mahomes is your quarterback, you have to be here in the Super Bowl. So you don’t have time to, say, spend a year trying to figure out X, Y, and Z and how he can put it together. But when you have 15 people, you can do anything. For example, you and I could go there, and maybe we could score 20 points with Patrick Mahomes as our quarterback.
– I don’t know. With your–
– And my–
– With your back and my knee, I should take less than 20 points.
– It might be a little tricky, but it’s just the funniest thing for me when you go on Twitter right now and someone is posting a quarterback performance chart, right?
– Oh yes.
– There is just a red line that is so far ahead of everyone else. I mean, someone posted it today, like, EPA for trying against the top five passes. And he’s like…
– This is ridiculous.
– He plays at the Pro Bowl level against even the best defensemen you’ll see in the league. So he’s different, dude. Like, he’s just a different breed of quarterback. Doesn’t matter.
– And it’s okay to say that and, like, admit it’s still pretty early in his career. I mean, how old is he, 26, 27, something like that. But we see something different. We are seeing something… I don’t want to say unprecedented. But I mean, just because he’s… it’s kind of like.
– It’s kind of.
– Yes, I know, I know. It’s wild. I mean, will he ever be as successful in terms of the Super Bowl as Brady, but he’s been in five AFC Championship games in a row. This will be his third Super Bowl and he hasn’t even started his first season.
– Yeah. Every year that Patrick Mahomes started, the Chiefs go through at least one Super Bowl game. Like–
– Yeah.
– — I know we tend to — the way I think Americans look at the sports media, it’s like it’s almost as bad as getting into a game and losing is almost as bad as, for example, , don’t get there at all.
– Yeah.
– But when you have the opportunity to play for the Super Bowl so often, no one else does.
– Right.
– That’s five AFC Championship games in a row. Like, it looks like some kind of video game [BLEEP]. Like, it makes no sense. I look at him and I’m shocked. You know the fling he made last week to [INAUDIBLE] on the goal line against–
– Oh yes.
– – Bengals. And he’s just like… he moves around in his pocket. And he looks up and he just drills it right into his chest. Like, that is … it’s different.
– This is different.
– It’s special. So, for the people who like that if you’re already sick of this Patrick Mahomes thing, you should buckle up, man. Like–
– It will be a long trip.
– Perhaps we could do this for the next 15 years. So buckle up.
– Man, if we’ve been doing this for 15 years, I feel pretty good.
– Me too.
– Yes, that would be great.
– Yeah.
– And you mentioned MVS. For example, the collection of receivers around him, you know, it’s obvious that losing a guy like Tyreke Hill is a huge problem – not only creating a goal vacuum that you mentioned, but how teams protect offense in general. For example, at the beginning of the season, no one saw more people than the Chiefs wide receivers. And these guys were between MVS, Skyy Moore and JuJu Smith-Schuster, like, they had about 1800 yards or something. But in terms of impact on the field, it’s clear, for example, who’s on top here, and that’s what I think makes this season so special from him, and why he’s going to win MVP and why he can win a second Super Bowl here.
– Yes, he has achieved LeBron status. He should win MVP every year until he retires. But he won’t.
– No, obviously.
– There will be fatigue, but as I’ve said a million times, he’s different.
