Previously, Adesanya (23-1) and Pereira (6-1) clashed twice in the kickboxing ring, with Pereira winning both matches. The Brazilian first defeated Adesanya by decision in April 2016 and then brutally knocked out Adesanya in a rematch in March 2017.

Since then, Adesanya has established himself as one of the best fighters in all of mixed martial arts. He is currently ranked third in the MMA Fighting rankings regardless of weight class, and is a perfect 12-0 in the UFC middleweight division.

In his last fight, Adesanya handily defeated Jared Cannonier via unanimous decision at UFC 276, earning his fifth middleweight belt defense.

Pereira also fought at UFC 276 and scored the biggest win of his MMA career by brutally knocking out Shawn Strickland less than three minutes into the fight to secure his trilogy fight with The Last Style Bender.

The win propelled Pereira to 7th in the MMA Fighting middleweight rankings and continued his UFC unbeaten streak after wins over Andreas Mikhailidis and Bruno Silva.

“This is where it all ends,” Adesanya tweeted Friday after the announcement. “Kill or be killed.”
