Airs of change in Bilbao Basket. Following the departure of Álex Mumbrú from the Basque entity, a new tenant of the Miribilla bench has been confirmed. Jaume Ponsarnau (Tàrrega, 1971) takes the helm of Surne Bilbao Basket after a few recent dates in which he was even linked to the newly promoted ACB de Bàsquet Girona project, commanded on court and by the Gasol brothers.
In fact, Ponsarnau had worked as an adviser to the Catalan squad in the final weeks that led to promotion in the Final Four of the LEB Oro against Movistar Estudiantes. A position to which he agreed after leaving Casademont Zaragoza, a place where he never worked and left the hands bordering on relegation and with a defense far from competitive.
A bad stage that does not tarnish Ponsarnau’s work in recent times. Especially, in his three campaigns -including that of the pandemic with the Final Exceptional Phase- in which he won the Eurocup title in 2019 and accessed the Euroleague. Never falling below 55% of wins in the League.
In Bilbao, Ponsarnau will have to lead a team that will combine the Endesa League and the Basketball Champions League. Regarding the squad, the renewals of Ludde Hakanson, Andrew Goudelock, Tomeu Rigo and Álex Reyes have been confirmed. The sports management, led by Rafa Pueyo, would value making about eight additions.
