Brandon Aiyuk’s acrobatic moves became the talk of the 49ers’ offense at training camp. His increased level of play was visible to onlookers, with freeback Jimmy Ward going so far as to say Aiyuk had the best camp of any 49ers.

Ward, 31, is entering his ninth season, and he’s not one to skimp on words or dance around a theme. At Wednesday’s post-workout press conference, he bluntly and verbosely praised the third-year wide receiver.

“Now he has an outstanding camp,” Ward said. “I feel like he has the best camp of anyone on the team, both offensively and defensively.”

There was caution.

“Oh. Except Bosa. Bosa will be Bosa,” he said. “But I’m just saying that BA is taking his game to the next level. It’s crazy. I haven’t won heads-up with him yet. I mean, in the past I beat him a couple of reps last year, but not this year, though I’ll get him soon.

Here is a video of one of those one-on-one reps that Aiyuk won:

Aiyuk’s big year will be huge for the 49ers for several reasons.

First, he’s been on the cusp of a breakthrough since his rookie days. His slow start last year put him in danger for a career turning point. He finished the season very well and seems to have learned the lessons from last year’s camp and applied them to put together his best camp this season.

Last year, some bad training habits saw Aiyuk find himself in head coach Kyle Shanahan’s doghouse, culminating in a 2020 first-round pick when he only gained 141 yards and threw one touchdown on 13 catches in his first seven. games. However, he crashed out of the final 10 and had 43 catches, 685 yards and four touchdowns in that event.

Secondly, a big year for Aiyuk probably means that Trey Lance has settled in well. After more than a week of training, it became clear that they had a good understanding. Having a receiver he trusts will be paramount to Lance’s development.

Camp won’t tell the full story of the season, but it’s a very good start for Aiyuk in what could be his defining offensive year for San Francisco.
