The San Francisco 49ers were forced to return to Jimmy Garoppolo after starting quarterback Trey Lance suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter of Week 2’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.
After the competition, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced that Lance had broken his ankle and would undergo surgery at the end of the season.
Lance appeared to have injured his ankle during a scheduled run in second and eighth place at the Seahawks’ 21-yard line. He was immediately given an aerial throw and taken off the field.
It’s a huge blow for the 49ers, who have been counting on Lance to bolster their offense after Garoppolo led San Francisco to an NFC title game in 2021. This offseason, the 49ers selected Lance as a starter over Garoppolo but were unable to trade their veteran. all summer. The 49ers eventually restructured Garoppolo’s contract to keep him with the team as Lance’s backup and insurance policy in case of such a situation.
Garoppolo performed well as he relieved Lance, scoring one touchdown and running another during a 27-7 win over the Seahawks.
