Ehe Saturday June 25 will be a historic day for the stadium ‘El Molinón-Enrique Castro ‘Quini, one of the Cathedrals of Spanish football. For the first time in its 114-year history, it will host a meeting of rugby and, accordingly, it will be first level: spainthe XV del León, will receive the Barbariansthe most classic of the sport’s All Star teams, which has put together a super team to take on Spain.
The Barbarians have had an intense week in Gijon, with events and meetings of all kinds. On this occasion it was the turn of their hosts, the people from Gijon and Sporting.
First was the legendary Joaquina World Cup player in 1982, 40 years ago at this time, who received his oval baptism inaugurating the El Molinón clubs.
Later, the Barbarians ‘took’ San Lorenzo beach for light training as part of their preparation for the match against Spain on Saturday. Directed by John Mulvihill and captained by Hadleigh Parkes, the Barbarians had races and some exercises among the bathers, who enjoyed the presence of several of the best ‘rugbiers’ in the world.
Later, players of the disappeared Real Sporting de Gijon rugby (1965-95. It was succeeded by the Gijón Rugby Club) they were able to enjoy their sport on the pitch at El Molinón, in a ‘tocata’ – a match in which the tackles are replaced by touches on whoever carries the oval. In a family atmosphere, Asturian veterans and some of the best in the world got together and, as is tradition, they went to celebrate the Third Half.
On Saturday, the Barbarians will face the XV of the Lion. The match, organized by Zuary Group, has been conceived as a rugby party –the Barbarians come from beating England 21-52– and as a total show, with pyrotechnics, live music, surprises and a lot of rugby, of course.
