GREENSBORO, North Carolina. Confidence was not necessarily the fuel for John Hugh’s special round on Thursday at the Wyndham Championship.

He hit a 9-under 61 early in the first round of the tournament at Sedgefield Country Club, taking advantage of milder morning conditions to put together a career-best round and take the tournament lead.

The 32-year-old Huh called all this somewhat strange and surprising.

“It’s a little weird,” he said, “because I didn’t do well in my game and my career went down, it’s a little weird. Mixed feelings, but I’ll take it any day. I was able to take advantage of a good break and good shots, that’s all I can say.”

Hu leads Sungjae Im, who scored 7-under 63, with two shots and a group of 5-under Brian Stroud, Cameron Percy, Aaron Wise, Austin Smotherman and Ben Wheels with four hits.

Ha said he benefited from his morning game time. He was paired with Nick Watney and Vince Whaley, their group first hit the first target at 6:50 am and ended the day before the hotter afternoon arrived.

Ha drove five birdies in a row to hit a 29 on the front ninth side of the course and then buried a shot over 38 feet for the eagle on the 15th par-5 hole.

“I knew it would be fast,” he said. “I landed a good shot, hit my line. I was lucky that he hit the flagpole and hit the hole. It was just one of those holes where you hit the spot and hopefully it will come in.”
