Jordan Wright happy at light heavyweight, but ‘the UFC needs a 195-pound division’

LAS VEGAS – Ideally, Jordan Wright I would like a weight category between middle and light heavyweight.

Wright (12-4 MMA, 2-4 UFC) returns to 205 pounds on Saturday when he takes on Zach Pauga (6-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in the co-main event of the UFC Apex tournament in Las Vegas. The map airs on ESPN+.

Now, having lost three fights, Wright knows his work may be on the line against Paugi. He has won two light heavyweight fights in his career and thinks he can reclaim that success without dropping to 185 pounds.

“Wrestling at £205 is what I did during my UFC debut and it’s what I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember,” Wright told reporters at Media Day on Wednesday. “I was at (1) 85 for a long time and the weight loss was starting to weigh on me and I felt like I needed to make some changes.”

Wright is confident he can break into the light heavyweight division, but the 31-year-old believes the 195-pound division is perfect for him.

“I’m not going to lie, the UFC needs a 195-pound division,” Wright said. “I’m not saying I won’t be great at 205 pounds. I think I will be the champion at 205 pounds. who are kind of intermediates who can do 195 pounds who are too big for 185 pounds and have to fight really big guys at 205 pounds.”
