MMany remember José Ramón Uriarte riding a bicycle. For years, he competed in Banesto (later in Festina) and participated in five Tours de France, three Giros d’Italia and five Vueltas a España. He was a gregarious member of Miguel Indurain and helped him to four of his Tour de France wins, as well as one of his Giros.
Now Uriarte, 55, has been battling fire for decades, as a firefighter in the Bizkaia Provincial Council. In fact, he has joined as a member of one of the brigades that has surrendered to put out the flames in Ujué.
This is how Uriarte recounted his work against fire in the program ‘El Larguero’, from Ser. “It has been a tough and complicated situation because the terrain was very steep, with many wind farms,” said Uriarte. “These fires are of a dimension that we are not used to in Bizkaia. And the important thing is to work serenely to face extinction safely”.
I always carry Miguel in my mind and in my heart.
The former cyclist also recalled his time on the bike and the figure of Indurain. “I always carry it in my mind and in my heart,” said the former runner, who continues to ride a bike. “I’m always close to the bike, I take a little walk and I feel much better.”
