Without Howard, the Lakers reportedly narrowed down their search to three candidates — Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darwin Ham, Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts. Of the three candidates, Ham reportedly made the strongest impression on the Los Angeles front office. The team is expected to conduct in-person interviews in the near future.

Ham has been with the Bucks since 2018, following Milwaukee head coach Mike Budenholzer of the Atlanta Hawks. Ham was an integral part of Budenholzer’s coaching staff at the time, helping lead the Bucks to the championship last season and helping develop two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. In the past, he had already applied for the position of head coach several times, but he never received a single one.

Stotts has not coached since parting ways with the Portland Trail Blazers after the 2020–21 season. During his time there, he helped them reach the Western Conference Finals and missed the playoffs only once in nine years. Atkinson was Brooklyn’s head coach from 2016 to 2020. Since then, he has worked as an assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Warriors.

There was some speculation that the Lakers might trade Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers, and that the 66ers would be open to doing so. However, according to a league source, such speculation is untrue as the 66ers want Rivers to remain as their coach.
