After months of refusing to bring the Ravens into contract negotiations, quarterback Lamar Jackson is finally in urgent need of a deal. And that might be enough to keep him out of training camp.
Asked if he’d show up for training camp without a new contract, Jackson told reporters via ESPN.com on Thursday: “We’re talking about it. I dont know“.
This is an important point because it reverses the notion that the Ravens are willing to pay Jackson but he is not willing to take their money. By the end of July, it’s entirely possible that he’ll want more than the Ravens will pay.
That Jackson has decided to drop his earlier refusal to speak to the team about a new contract is a positive. This positive becomes negative if Jackson ends up wanting much more than the Ravens will pay.
However, talking about it is much better than the inexplicable silence that reigned for months.
