Leeds United avoid Premier League relegation and Jesse Marsch’s team is set to add more American flavor

Leeds United needed Newcastle’s help but they took care of their end of the deal by beating Brentford 2-1 on Sunday to avoid relegation from the Premier League on the final day of the season. Goals by Rafina and Jack Harrison were enough to see off the Brentford team, who ended the match with nine players after Sergi Canos was sent off after scoring a goal.

But it was a day when Leeds played well enough to deserve the luck that kept them safe in the English top flight, and Burnley were back in the league after six successive seasons in the Premier League. After Jesse Marsh replaced Marcelo Beisla, he got a tough job in the middle of the season. The American manager had to stop the Leeds team from losing goals, and he did enough. Leeds United have been firmly in the middle of the table since 28 February, conceding just 19 goals, 12th in the Premier League.

While this number won’t sound like a lot, it was of great importance as Leeds were really struggling to score points after Marsh took over. Prior to his appointment, they had conceded a mind-blowing 60 goals in 26 games, the worst record in the Premier League.

Leeds are a team that have improved to stay in the Premier League, but they have also not reached the high standards that their fans expected, especially as they finished ninth in the league in their first Premier League season in 2020–2021. This begs the question: what’s next for the squad?

This has been partly answered by MLS Soccer insider Tom Bogart, who said USMNT midfielder Brenden Aaronsson’s next move will be to Leeds United.

Aaronsson has made an impression during his time at RB Salzburg and will be a great addition as his work rate and vision are a perfect match for Leeds’ style. In 26 Austrian Bundesliga appearances, Aaronsohn scored four goals and assisted four more, as well as scoring two goals in the Champions League game during the Salzburg dream that pushed Bayern Munich to their limits.

But will he play Rafina or replace him? The Brazilian midfielder has been linked with moves to both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, which makes it look like Leeds United will have a hard time keeping him. With 11 goals and three more assists, he has played a decisive role at Leeds United by avoiding a fall and if Marsh can keep him by adding Aaronsohn to the squad, expectations for a healthy Leeds attack will no doubt rise.

Arrival that might make sense is another name Marsh is familiar with in Tyler Adams. With Leeds needing help wherever they can get it in midfield, Adams – another USMNT player – would be a good addition if they can beat other teams because of his signature. Since Adams has not started in important matches for RB Leipzig, such as the DFB Pokal or the Europa League semi-final, Domenico Tedesco may consider him redundant.

Marsh coached Adams during his tenure with the New York Red Bulls and also briefly with RB Leipzig. Along with strengthening the outside rear positions, the name Adams makes sense. Depending on the situation, Adams can be an outside defender himself, as he plays straight back, similar to how Stuart Dallas replaces midfield, moving to either flank if necessary.

Junior Firpo disappointed by receiving almost as many yellow cards (11) as starts for the team (19). He has been involved in some of their worst defeats and is likely to get some offseason competition. Joe Gelhardt is the one who could get more playing time next season as his performances helped lead Leeds even when he didn’t score. With Patrick Bamford getting injured on and off throughout the season, Gelhardt had critical moments to grow. He will most likely not be a starter next season and other strikers will most likely join him, but being promoted to one of the first names off the bench would be a step forward for him and Leeds as a whole.

Marsh and Leeds don’t know exactly what their 2022/23 opening squad will look like, but they do know the game will be in the Premier League.
