Premier League champions Manchester City are close to signing Stefan Ortega of Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld as backup for primary goalkeeper Ederson, according to reports released on Thursday.
Kicker magazine and top-selling daily newspaper Bild report that the 29-year-old will join the Citizens for free as his contract with Bielefeld has expired.
Ortega was one of Bielefeld’s best players last season, keeping six clean sheets in 33 league games, although the club were relegated after finishing second from bottom in Germany’s top flight.
He was on the fringes of Germany in last summer’s Euro 2020 final as the fourth goalkeeper in reserve in case Manuel Neuer, Kevin Trapp or Bernd Leno were injured.
