Six weeks ago, Manchester United didn’t score a single point in their first two games, including a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of tiny Brentford, but since then, Erik ten Hag has changed course on his way to four straight wins, including a 3- 1 win over PL leaders Arsenal last time to set up this hugely intriguing showdown on Sunday.

Key storylines and star players

Despite a couple of disappointing draws (Newcastle and Aston Villa), it was an unbeaten start to the 2022-2023 season for Manchester City, who still lead the Champions League in ball possession (66.4% per game), and also becoming an unstoppable attacking force from last season. season (14 goals in the first seven games) to this season (23). That’s not to say it was easy, as Manchester City underwent a tactical shift of their own to better exploit the big Norwegian’s poaching ability. While they’ve had to score several times this season, it highlighted a newfound spontaneity for a team that was as regimented as any in the world. Will that freedom earn Pep Guardiola his first Champions League trophy since 2011 and perhaps a third consecutive league title (and fifth in six years) to boot?

As far as Manchester United is concerned, the Ten Hag era has already been a wild rollercoaster ride, however brief. Losing in a row is one thing, but the real grievances were miserable performances. With four wins in a row, the Dutchman also settled on a midfield formation with Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen operating in the (virtually) double center, with Bruno Fernandes being the most advanced of the three. This certainly brought defensive stability, but more importantly, this change brought out a deadly counterattacking side. Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Fernandes each scored two goals during the winning streak, with rookie Anthony also having fun on his debut. With space behind (and a proper serve from deep), Ten Hag could have his first winning formula (albeit one that doesn’t look like it at all).
