Fred and Anthony were the heroes of the day as Manchester United struggled to beat and eliminate Barcelona in the Europa League round of 16 decider on Thursday.

After a 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou last week, the European giants went head-to-head, once again exchanging goals in the first leg. 2 at Old Trafford. It was a match-and-draw that is typically seen in the late stages of the UEFA Champions League, but nonetheless was no less exciting due to its place in the second tier competition.
Barcelona drew first blood in the 18th minute, after a completely unnecessary hook to Bruno Fernandes and a dash to Alejandro Balda was called a foul in the Red Devils’ penalty area. The extent to which Fernandes fouled Balda may have been debatable, but the fact remains that the touch was unjustified at such a great distance from the goal and away from the goal.
Robert Lewandowski approached the penalty and with a stop-start run put David de Gea on his skates, who was unable to push the ball past the post, although he put his hand to it.

As the first half went on, Manchester United held the ball and created less and less, necessitating a quick half-time substitution when Anthony replaced Wout Weghorst on the right flank. Within two minutes of the restart they were equal when Fred finished past Marc-André ter Stegen for the first time and the Red Devils were in full flight.

However, it was the same with Barcelona, as the game dragged on from start to finish, and both sides had scoring chances.
Luke Shaw kicked off the game with a heel to Fernandes, who made a skillful pass to Alejandro Garnacho in the penalty area. Manchester United will need three pieces of cherry to win blaugrana Defence, as attempts by Garnacho and Fred were blocked, but Anthony’s left-handed curler found his way through a sea of bodies and under Ter Stegen’s arm to make it 2-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.

Almost four minutes after the end of the second half, Rafael Varane laughed at Barcelona for the last time after 10 years at Real Madrid. Lewandowski raced behind the Manchester United defense and batted De Gea at the net, but Varane frantically recovered to score the ball as the very last line of defence.

The first legs of the UEFA Europa League and Europa Conference League play-offs were pretty incredible as some huge teams battled it out for the round of 16.

Manchester United and Barcelona went head to head in a thrilling 2-2 draw, with both giants looking to reach the final stages of this competition as their recovery continues. Juventus, Ajax, RB Salzburg and Sporting Lisbon have been given very tough assignments in the Europa League play-offs to reach the round of 16 and their draw is still hanging in the balance.
Arsenal reached the round of 16 of the Europa League after winning their Europa League group, so Mikel Arteta’s team will be looking forward to it.
West Ham United are gearing up for the UEFA Conference League play-offs, where any of 16 teams can play, who will first have to compete in the play-off rounds. Some dangerous teams have been relegated from the Europa League to the Conference League, with Lazio now among the favourites.
