Manchester United broke a brief trophy drought on Sunday by winning the League Cup at Wembley Stadium. Their 2-0 win extended Newcastle United’s drought to a much larger number.
Marcus Rashford and Casemiro scored, the grumpy central midfielder was easily picked as Man of the Match as Manchester United lifted their first trophy since the 2017 League Cup and Europa League double.
This is Manchester United’s sixth League Cup and puts the Red Devils third in league title history behind Liverpool (9) and Manchester City (8).

It is also Erik ten Hag’s first trophy for the Red Devils and the Dutchman showed off his prowess by stopping a magpie attack in the second half.
There is no doubt that the whole mentality of United has changed since the club approved the sacking of club legend Cristiano Ronaldo, approved keeping captain Harry Maguire on the bench and showed the world that the keys are in Ten Hag’s hands.
Eddie Howe will continue to wait to win a major trophy even though he led Bournemouth to three promotions from League Two to the Premier League between 2010 and 2015.
Newcastle have not played in a final since 1999 and have not won a national trophy since 1955. The stadium was flooded with black and white and the club will feel that the best is yet to come.

Erik ten Hag receives his first (of many?) jewels
Manchester United may have lost their balance as Newcastle prepared for this fight, but Erik ten Hag’s performance over the course of the 90 minutes was timely and methodical.
Once the Red Devils took the lead, Ten Hag showed his shrewdness as the tournament boss. Diogo Dalot, on yellow and a bit wild, was yanked at halftime. Fred will join him in the 69th minute.
It was here that United may have won the match despite conceding the ball to the Magpies. Marcel Sabitzer and Scott McTominay helped to lock up desperate and lively opponents.
Just when it was too much to ask for his defenders, Jadon Sancho arrived from Anthony. It was then a pleasant replacement for Harry Maguire for Marcus Rashford, with the former getting his much-anticipated time on the pitch in the winning final and the latter getting his well-deserved desserts from the crowd.
The FA Cup field is a good fit for Manchester United, the Europa League isn’t too far away, and there’s even a little Premier League gleam in their eyes. Manchester United on the move.
Newcastle ahead of schedule now on schedule
Despite all the problems Newcastle had before this, including Nick Pope’s stupid suspension and Martin Dubravka’s status as a draw, Eddie Howe can revisit this tape and learn two things:
- He made his people compete
- He lost the game when things went wrong
It’s a rewarding experience for both the manager and his players, who definitely didn’t have the big game astuteness that Rafael Varane and Casemiro had. And perhaps this resulted in Newcastle not having an advantage in a game in which they won the xG battle 1.17-0.86.
With Anthony Gordon also tied for the cup, the Magpies’ bench was never something Howe could comfortably turn to in a pinch.
Alexander Isak came on at half-time for an attacking run, but Bruno Guimarães and Allan Saint-Maximin eventually ran out of steam and Howe brought in decent players like Joe Willock, but not names like Sabitzer, Sancho and Maguire (whatever you think about they were not thought).
It’s a dream and Newcastle won’t be doing well right now, but another year of real market buying will make the Magpies a real club threat.
Loris Karius gets a good moment
Manchester United’s batted goal looked bad at first, but it’s hard not to feel like Loris Karius was the winner in defeat.
The third goalkeeper was berated by some for a difficult second half in the Champions League final that Liverpool lost to Real Madrid, despite suffering from an undiagnosed concussion at the hands of Sergio Ramos and surviving it.
Karius made seven saves on Sunday as Manchester United scored a third and Newcastle opened wide trying to bounce back.

casemiro: Absolute power. His first headbutt was a fitting punch line for a player who does all the small and nasty things in the middle of a park.
Raphael Varane: Like Casemiro above, he showed a steely grit, as well as that hunger that never leaves the greats despite so many trophies won.
Luke Shaw: What a ball for newbie Casemiro; In many ways, Miguel Almiron closed, except for the bright first 10-15 minutes.
Marcus Rashford: What kind of injury to worry about?
Bruno Guimarães: Missed a botched free kick to one of United’s goals, but that’s why Newcastle looked like a threat to come back the rest of the way.
Kieran Trippier: Who would have thought, while apologizing to Rhys James, that the 32-year-old Trippier would return to England from Atlético Madrid and become the most complete right-back in the Premier League?
What’s next?
On Wednesday, Manchester United will host West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup before heading to Liverpool on Sunday.
Newcastle can’t lick their wounds for too long with a trip to Manchester City on Saturday.

11:55 AM ET: This is the right fight, this one. Newcastle had more ball, but Manchester United, through Marcus Rashford, found themselves behind the Magpie backline and will feel that this too can be an advantage.
Casemiro has been very busy for Manchester United, who have two of three shots in the game – both saved by Loris Karius, who looks comfortable enough.
Diogo Dalot received a yellow card and the Red Devils clearly opted for violence early in the game, earning four fouls.

Now Allan Saint-Maximin is punching the mat to the right of the Manchester United goal, but his chance is blocked. “St. Max is begging for handball, but nothing comes of it.

12:08 pm ET: Newcastle reacted quickly, albeit without a finish, and the Magpies do see the yellow card awarded to Fred for their problems. Thus, Dalot and Fred turn yellow already 37 minutes after the start of the match.

12:19 pm ET: Newcastle need a break, but they need goals too. It almost comes to the end when Dan Byrne heads wide after a nice corner kick.
But the Magpies will soon get the first one, and while Sean Longstaff fidgets on the pitch, trying to knock a second yellow out of Fred … Newcastle could do with a little reorientation too.
12:38 pm ET: Two substitutions at half time. Dalot and his yellow leave for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Eddie Howe replaces Sean Longstaff with Alexander Isak. More attack.
12:50 pm ET: The second half was just as sketchy, especially as Manchester United don’t have to do anything to claim a trophy that would spark recognition in the Premier League.
Newcastle is now winning the fight xG, 0.74-0.50. But there is no trophy for it.
12:59 pm ET: Allan Saint-Maximin is trying to get Magpies back on the case and he won a corner but nothing came of it.
Manchester United were very disciplined, and at Ten Hag his men were drowning eight, nine for the ball. It will take something special to get Newcastle back on the pitch, but there’s still 25 minutes to go, plus a stop at Wembley.
13:06 ET: Time always matters when you’re down 2-0, but with 18 minutes left it’s unclear.
Manchester United brought in Scott McTominay and Marcel Sabitzer to close the situation, but Howe clearly doesn’t think he has the deciding factors on the bench as Joe Willock, Jacob Murphy and Elliot Anderson are his best attacking options.
