The Red Devils had a very positive pre-season as their new coach had already clearly instilled his tactics and philosophy in the playing team. However, the saga of Cristiano Ronaldo and Frenkie de Jonge has not been too positive for United as the future of the former and a potential deal for the latter have yet to be decided.

As for Brighton, the Graham Potter team are looking to improve on their best run in top division history by finishing ninth last season, but they will have to do so without Mark Cucurella, whom they sold to Chelsea in a deal that could be worth up to £75 million dollars. Potter will still be able to perform miracles (sorry, had to), and the Seagulls will surely spend that money on a new striker.

Key storylines

All eyes will be on Erik ten Hag as more than 75,000 fans will arrive at Old Trafford with a sense of hope and intrigue. The main storyline around United this summer has to do with Cristiano Ronaldo’s desire to leave, but it looks like he could actually start on Sunday as Anthony Martial (who was very impressive in pre-season) got a minor injury. United are expecting a strong return of Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho this season, with new players Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malasia to play key roles. Frenkie de Jong has yet to sign for United and ETH wants to add another quality central midfielder before the end of the summer window. The fact that United lost to Brighton at the end of last season makes this a good test of how far they have come under Erik ten Hag this summer.

Brighton are one of the best teams in the Premier League to watch and Graham Potter is destined to rise to the top if they continue like this. The main challenge has been consistently scoring goals and if they can do that this season (the new Deniz Undaw will help with that), the Seagulls could be the team to wreck the top six and aim for European qualifiers. They have a good mix of youth and experience and each player knows their roles and responsibilities. Losing Cucurella is a blow, but Brighton always have a plan when it comes to hiring and they will no doubt have a few more gems this summer.

Manchester United Team News, Injuries, Squad Options

Anthony Martial is out with a minor hamstring problem while Cristiano Ronaldo is available but may not start due to his limited pre-season action. Brandon Williams, Jadon Sancho and Facundo Pellistri have cramps and Luke Shaw is available after a fever. New contracts Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen are ready to debut at home.

Brighton team news, injuries, squad options

Poland international Jakub Moder is out of Brighton after suffering a serious knee injury last season and will miss until early 2023. Argentina international Alexis Mac Allister has recovered from a groin injury. It will be interesting to see who comes out on top at Brighton as Danny Welbeck and Neil Maupey have additional opponents.
