Former Red Sox pitcher asks Mariners for release originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Phillips Valdez is heading west after being assigned to the Boston Red Sox earlier this week.

The team announced that on Friday, the Seattle Mariners waived their right to the right pitcher. He was subsequently transferred to Triple-A Tacoma.

The 30-year-old Valdez has amassed a 4.41 ERA in 16 1/3 innings thrown out of the Red Sox bullpen this season. In three seasons (65 games) with Boston, he posted a 4.67 ERA and 1.41 KNITA. He has a 3.06 ERA (17.2 IP) with 19 strikeouts in 14 games with Triple-A Worcester.
