CHAPEL HILL, NC — North Carolina hired former star Erin Matson — just a month after her graduation — to take over the field hockey program following the retirement of 10-time NCAA champion Karen Shelton.
The school announced the move on Tuesday, about two months after Shelton announced she was retiring as the sport’s top coach.
Matson, 22, has been a star on four of Shelton’s NCAA championship teams, including last year’s unbeaten season as a career leader in the NCAA Tournament. She also leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in career scoring and is the league’s only five-time hitter in a year.
Matson has been a member of the US national team since the age of 17.
