Sam Darnold may or may not start playing for the Panthers this season, but unless he’s a starting quarterback, the job is unlikely to belong. Matt Corral.

Panthers, which still seem like a likely landing site for Baker Mayfield, selected Corral as the 94th overall development quarterback. Their plan hasn’t changed since the offseason with him.

“He has a good spirit, good attitude towards him when he walks into the building and I think he realizes there is no schedule for him,” Panthers coach Matt Rule said via TheAthletic.com’s Joe Person. “There’s no ‘Hey, you’re sitting for a year’ or ‘Hey, you’re playing the first game.’ There: “Your job is to prepare, and the opportunity will come when it comes, and you must be ready for it.”

“I think he has such a sense of urgency when he is working. I respect the way it works. But he has a lot to learn. There’s a lot to learn.”

Corral said his mindset is to be in the starting XI, which is the right mindset, but something is unlikely to happen, at least at the start of the season. Corral will sit and study. The only question is, who will he sit behind?
