Medvedev, who will not play at Wimbledon due to a Russian ban due to the war in Ukraine, needed to come from behind to overtake Aslan Karatsev in Wednesday’s round of 16.

Medvedev only had one opportunity to make a break against 20th-placed Bautista Agut, who advanced without playing in the last 16 matches because Nick Kyrgios withdrew with a stomach injury.

Second-place Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the quarter-finals, but it took him three sets against American Marcos Giron to make it to the quarter-finals on Thursday. His 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 victory came over 2 1/2 hours.

“There was a lot of work today. It was not easy,” Tsitsipas said. “I had to deal with the heat, I had to deal with the great game of my opponent. It was a lot of physical effort. I had a fighting spirit.”

The sixth-placed Greek, who leads the tour with 38 wins this season, will face France’s Benjamin Bonzi, who defeated Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4.
