“Someone told me about it a few days ago,” Medvedev said after the match. “Otherwise I wouldn’t know. It’s nice, kind of a milestone.

“I want more wins, but it’s nice to have 250. We’ll try to get more.”

Medvedev is playing in his first tournament since being knocked out of the quarter-finals in Mallorca on June 23. He missed Wimbledon due to a ban on Russian and Belarusian players following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Medvedev made the first break of the match and won the first set.

He saved the first break point he faced early in game two and got the break needed to take a 4-2 lead against Hijikata.

The 21-year-old Australian, ranked 224th in the world, struggled to fend off a flood of break points before Medvedev shut him out 90 minutes later.

“It’s definitely not easy to play after you’ve stopped for a while, especially (playing my) first match on hard courts in a long, long time since Miami,” Medvedev said.

“Feelings were good. I could break a little more, but when you win, everything is fine.

Then Medvedev will meet with Ricardas Berankis from Lithuania, who beat the Argentinean Facundo Bagnis with a score of 7:6 (7/4), 6:3.

Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada, who finished second, also moved forward, beating Alex Hernandez of Mexico 6-3, 7-5.
