NEW YORK. The New York Mets acquired right-handers to fill in the gaps in their pitching. Eliezer Hernandez as well as Jeff Brigham in a trade with the Miami Marlins.

Miami gets minor league right-hander Franklin Sanchez and a player to be named or get paid.

The Mets also demanded right-hander William Woods from waivers from NL rival East Atlanta.

The 27-year-old Hernandez has gone 3-6 with a 6.35 ERA in 20 games for the Marlins this year, including 10 starts. He gave up 19 home runs in 62 1/3 innings, 60 strikeouts and 22 walks.

In five major league seasons with Miami, he is 10-21 with a 5.04 ERA in 90 games (48 starts).

Brigham, 30, has been 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA and one save in 16 assists for the Marlins this season. He struck out 28 and walked 10 in 24 innings.

In four major league seasons with Miami, Brigham is 3-7 with a 4.52 ERA and two saves. He appeared in 53 games, making four starts.

Both pitchers are eligible for arbitration this winter.

Woods, 23, made his major league debut this season, throwing two shutout innings in two games for the Braves. He was 2–9 with a 4.60 ERA in 59 games (18 starts) in four minor league seasons with the Atlanta organization.

All three rookies offer depth as the Mets rebuild their pitching lineup after a wild-card playoff loss to San Diego.

During the off-season, three members of the rotation became free agents: Chris Bassitt, Jacob de Grom as well as taijuan walker.

In the bullpen, almost all of the best pitchers on the team except Drew Smith became free agents, including Adam Piccolo, Seth Lugo, Trevor MayJoely Rodriguez, Michael Givens, Trevor Williams as well as Tommy Hunter.

Closer to the All-Star Game, Edwin Diaz returned on a five-year, $102 million contract.

The 22-year-old Sanchez was 2-2 with a 3.79 ERA in 17 combined games (seven starts) for Low-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn this year. He had 42 strikeouts and 21 walks in 35 2/3 innings.

The 6-foot-6 right-hander also competed in the Arizona Fall League for major minor league prospects, posting an 11.05 ERA in seven assists.

PITTSBURGH – Pittsburgh Pirates Trade Infielder Kevin Newman to Cincinnati in exchange for relief pitcher Dauri Moreta.

The deal came late Friday night, just after the Pirates offered Newman, their longest-serving player, a contract for the 2023 season.

Newman, 29, hit .274 with two home runs and 24 RBIs in 78 games for Pittsburgh in 2022. Newman became expendable after the advent of the shortstop. Oneil Cruzwho replaced Newman as a starter last season.

Newman, selected by the Pirates in the first round of the 2015 draft, has a .260 career hitter.

Moreta, 26, went 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 35 games for Cincinnati last season. The right-hander from the Dominican Republic had 39 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings of the job.
