Shutting down Diaz brings the elite closer to the bullpen, which is likely to see a lot of changes this offseason as most of the key pitchers will be free agents.

Diaz, who turns 29 in March, is ending a season in which he was the best and most dominant player in baseball.

In 2022, Diaz had a 1.31 ERA (0.90 FIP) and 0.83 WHIP when he hit 118 batters in 62 innings – a ridiculous 17.1 in nine. In 2022, he gave up just three home runs, the last of which he allowed on May 12.

Via Baseball ScholarDiaz was in the 100th percentile in 2022 when it comes to xBA, strikeout rate, xSLG, xERA/xwOBA and whiff rate. He was in the 99th percentile in fastball speed, 97th percentile in chase speed, 96th percentile in average exit speed, and 93rd percentile in barrel percentage.

While many focus on Diaz’s wonderful 2022, he’s been amazing since 2020.

In 150.1 innings in 150 games over the past three seasons, Diaz has amassed a 2.27 ERA (1.78 FIP) and 0.99 WHIP from 257 batters – a mind-blowing 15.4 over 9 games. total runs since he gave up 15 in 2019 during his first season in New York.

Diaz was an All-Star in 2022 and will not only receive Cy Young votes, but will likely receive multiple votes for how he performed this season. In the meantime, his opening song “Narko”, featuring contagious pipes, became a cultural phenomenon in the city.
