Game 9: Michigan Basketball (5-3) vs. Minnesota (4-4, 0-1 Big Ten)
When: 21:00 Thursday.
Where: Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
TELEVISION: Big Ten Network.
Radio: WWJ-AM (950; more radio affiliates).
Line: Michigan by 5.
Game Notes: Michigan’s two losses in a row (Virginia and Kentucky) are respectable enough, but the Wolverines will surely want to end the skid on this one and start the Big Ten season right. Hunter Dickinson (19.6 points and 9.1 rebounds per game) was very good, but he needs to play better loss of transfer guard Jaelyn Llewellyn (ACL) for the season. Look for Jett Howard (15.3 ppg) and Kobe Bufkin (9.6 ppg) who will also be more aggressive.
Minnesota is on a three-loss streak, and like Michigan, those losses (at UNLV, Virginia Tech, and Purdue) came to teams likely to dance in March. The Golden Gophers struggled to contain the Boilermakers inside and out, getting rebounds 41-21 and allowing 7 of 17 shots from three-point range. Zack Edey himself has scored more boards than all of Minnesota with 31 points and 22 rebounds (eight offensively). Jamison Battle has only played four games but leads the team with 13.8 points and 35.5 minutes per game. Dawson Garcia is right behind him with 13.2 mpg from 28.6 mpg in eight games.
The Wolverines would not play again until December 17 against Lipscomb. Minnesota hosts Mississippi on Sunday.
