The Michigan football program has once again spent a couple of weeks wondering if coach Jim Harbaugh will return in 2023. What did the players think during this period of football uncertainty?
Linebacker Mazi Smith recently shared his thoughts with SI.com’s Christopher Breiler.
“Nobody talks about itSmith (pictured with Harbaugh) said of the mood, while the coach’s status was in question. “We are kind of trained to behave like this: as soon as something becomes a reality, we can react. In the meantime, what are you going to do?”
Smith has been through this before. He was hired by former Michigan defense coordinator Greg Mattison. And then Mattison left for Ohio before Smith arrived.
“I learned early on that it wasn’t about personal relationships or friendships, but about business and winning,” Smith said. “And just like I want to leave at some point and move to the NFL for my career, the coaches are in the same boat.”
Indeed they are. They have always been. It’s time for the players to have the same flexibility as the coaches.
For Harbaugh, his true flexibility will be demonstrated by the terms of his next contract. In the current cycle, he could have gone to the NFL for as little as $3 million.
Harbaugh interviewed the Vikings last year. This year, he interviewed the Broncos and spoke to the Panthers before deciding to stay put.
