Michigan State basketball surges up USA TODAY coaches poll, Michigan falls out

The second full week of the men’s college basketball season featured many more high-profile games than the first week. So there are many more changes in the new USA TODAY Sports/NABC Coaches Poll.

Michigan State Basketball moved up 10 spots after beating Villanova and Kentucky last week.

North Carolina retains the top spot. For the most part, the Tar Heels went unopposed in their first four games and received 23 of 31 first-place votes cast this week. Houston climbs to 2nd place, receiving seven first-place nods. Kansas moved up to third with a mid-week win over Duke.

Texas is one of the most active players of the week. The Longhorns jump from 11th to 4th behind a dominant victory over the then No. 2 Gonzaga. The Bulldogs bounced back and beat Kentucky but dropped to 5th. Kentucky dropped nine places to 13th.

No. 6 Virginia also makes a big jump from No. 14 after wins over Baylor and No. 14 Illinois. Baylor holds seventh position, while Creighton, Arkansas and Duke round out the top 10.

Joining the vote this week are Connecticut No. 22, Iowa No. 24 and Maryland No. 25.

TCU, Dayton and Michigan were eliminated.
