Miguel Rojas trade: Marlins working to send shortstop to Dodgers for infield prospect, per reports

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in serious trade talks with the Miami Marlins over veteran shortstop Miguel Rojas. Athletic reports. Craig Mish adds that the Marlins in return would receive Jacob Amai’s infield prospect.

Rojas, who turns 34 in February, is finishing the 2022 season with the Marlins, in which he hit .236/.283/.323 with six home runs and nine stolen bases in 140 games. During his career Rojas an OPS+ out of 85 with over 5,500 defensive innings as a shortstop. According to StatcastRojas remains a plus fielder in this position.

Rojas, who was originally signed by the Reds as an amateur from Venezuela, made his major league debut for the Dodgers in 2014 at the age of 25. However, he traveled to Miami the following offseason in a seven-player trade that also included big names such as Enrique Hernandez, Dan Haren, Dee Strange-Gordon, Andrew Heaney and Austin Barnes. Back in Los Angeles, Rojas is looking to help fill the void in center field left by the departure of shortstop Trey Turner, who signed a free agent deal with the Phillies earlier this winter. Rojas could form a platoon at short range with left-hander Gavin Lux, and was also the second and third option at times.

As for the Marlins, Amaya, 24, is a former 11th rounder. During five minor league seasons, he hit .256/.362/.393 with 42 home runs, good walking records, and significant time at shorts and second. Last season, Amaya split time between the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
