Morning Report: Dan Hooker explains Tony Ferguson callout: ‘Now your honor is at stake’

Dan Hooker is ready to return to the octagon and has set his sights on one particular name.

“Gallows” has become a fan favorite in the 155-pound division in the UFC, but unfortunately for him, he’s had a tough time in his last five fights. 1-4 in his last stretch of action, Hooker most recently tried to rekindle his fighting flame by returning to 145-pound featherweight against top contender Arnold Allen. Putting in a good and chaotic effort as the one-round fight lasted, Hooker eventually succumbed to Arnold due to a flurry of elbows and punches to the cage.

Now the New Zealander can’t wait to touch someone, and he made it clear this week that he wants former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson. On Twitter, in response to some fans sharing the fight idea with him, Hooker tagged Ferguson, telling him that he would smash his own face.

“Putting fights is one of my best skills,” Hooker said. Submission Radio. “But I think they (UFC) have been looking for a fight for me for a while now. I’m just training, I’m tired of training, I want to go to fight camp, I want to fight, and now is the time.

“Tony Ferguson is a fight they are interested in and I think this fight makes a lot of sense. We are both in the same position, my management wants this fight, I think the fans want this fight, so how do I choose the fight? You tell someone you’re going to smash his face. If he agrees, he agrees. These are fighting words. If you’re going to start a fight, you must use battle words. Break your face; fighting words premium quality. Can’t be ignored. Now your honor is at stake. You ignore it, now your honor is at stake, my friend.

Ferguson, like Hooker, has also been unlucky in his last four matches and has suffered landslide defeats in all of them. However, “El Cucuy” undoubtedly had the most success in his last fight, giving Michael Chandler everything he was capable of in the first round of their meeting at UFC 274. In the end, this was where Ferguson’s success ended, as Chandler needed just one hit in the second round to take out one of the toughest fighters in divisional history.

At 17 seconds into the round, Chandler landed a pinpoint kick to the center, hitting Ferguson in the chin as hard as he could. After the loss, Ferguson admitted that had he not performed as well as he did in the first round, he probably would have ended his career on that note.

The door is now open for a fight with Hooker and if the City Kickboxing product got its way, it would do so as soon as possible.

“It’s definitely not [an easy stylistic matchup]Hooker said. “I feel like he looked great against Chandler. I feel like we both still have a lot of good fights left.

“This is not the sport of fairy tales. I saw that this is one of the things that the fans say; they don’t want any of us to lose, because then the one who loses will be in an even worse position. You may be new to MMA, but this is not the sport of fairy tales. It’s just not how our beautiful sport works. Only one can go on, only one can go forward, and it’s a big fight. A win for one of us will put the other back in the game and that’s exactly what you want, I’m not here to make up numbers. I’m not just here to hunt for easy wins. So let’s just do it.”
