Morning Report: Sean O’Malley questions Khamzat Chimaev’s last two weigh-ins: ‘He’s not gonna make 170’

Khamzat Chimaev has a lot to prove next time.

UFC 279 saw an unprecedented last-minute shuffle of the last three fights after the undefeated Borz dropped a whopping seven and a half pounds on weigh-in day. Chimaev’s lack of professionalism led to him being eliminated from the main event matchup against Nate Diaz and into the co-main event against Kevin Holland.

Both Chimaev and Diaz have won their new matches and are now heading in completely different directions. With Diaz leaving the promotion, Chimaev remains #3 on the official UFC welterweight rankings, but his ability to comfortably break the weight limit is in question.

As for Sean O’Malley, one of the biggest bantamweights in the 135-pound division, he’s not sure how true Chimaev’s claims that doctors stopped his weight loss process are.

“In the five or six years that I spent in the UFC, I never had a doctor come to me and examine me during a weight cut,” O’Malley said. his youtube channel. “I’m sure if they come to see my last pound while I’m in the bath, they’ll probably say ‘wow’ to someone. Like, a doctor comes in, they are not used to seeing people like that.”

Seemingly unwilling to make middleweight his primary weight class in the UFC, Chimaev has already had great success there. In two of his six fights in the UFC, Chimaev had early success, defeating John Phillips in his debut promotion and then one-punch Gerald Meerschaert in 16 seconds.

Chimaev defeated top 185-pound contender Jack Hermansson in a grappling match and expressed interest in fighting the winner of the upcoming title fight between Israel Adesanya and Alex Pereira. Also, he seems to have spawned a rivalry with Paulo Costa, so all scenarios lead to middleweight for the Swedish resident if those welterweight efforts are too physically demanding, as many like O’Malley are beginning to believe.

“I want to see him at 185 because even when he fought Gilbert Burns, he was on the towel, dropped five pounds,” O’Malley said. “When was the last time Khamzat scored 170? Not the last two fights, so it’s probably been over a year.

“I want to watch his next fight, I’m so curious who it will be. It can’t be Colby [Covington]. He won’t do 170, man. I just don’t see him – I don’t even know if the UFC will book him at 170 pounds. But it doesn’t look like he wants to move up to 185 pounds. Which is pretty amazing because it’s big and super cool. damn smart. And he must be sure. I don’t know if he wants those fights up there. These are the big boys.”

RECENT THOUGHTS

Despite the seriousness of the miss, I think that Chimaev’s weight is somewhat exaggerated. If this happens again, we will have real cause for concern. Book him against Covington at the Leon Edwards vs. Kamaru Usman 3 event.
