Morning Report: Sean O’Malley ‘surprised’ to be big betting underdog against Petr Yan: ‘ I’m a legit motherf*****’

Sean O’Malley thinks the bookmakers are wrong.

O’Malley will take on former bantamweight champion Petr Yan in the UFC 280 main event. It’s the biggest opportunity of the young star’s career, but at least according to the numbers, it’s also the biggest challenge as bookmakers set O’Malley as underdog +310 (implying a 24.4 percent chance of winning), which Suga didn’t expect.

“I think if you were to ask the smartest guys, the best fighters in the world, ‘What do you guys think?’ They’re like, “God, I don’t know. It’s hard! But if you ask random people, they say, “Oh, Peter is going to smoke him out.” He’s a 3-1 underdog or something like that,” O’Malley said. Helen Yee. “I’m a little surprised, but I also understand it from other people’s point of view. But I think I’m better than Petr Yan and I believe I’m going to go out and kick his ass, so I’m a little surprised.”

O’Malley cannot be completely wrong about this. Earlier this year, Daniel Cormier revealed that he and fellow UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov discussed O’Malley and praised Suga’s skills and abilities, which, according to O’Malley, only confirms his point.

“Like I said about the high level fighters, when they talk about my fight with Peter, I think the high level fighters see that I’m a real bastard,” O’Malley said. “I’m not just freaky and doing this crazy shit. I have legal skills. So it was really cool. Hearing something like that from Khabib, he’s one of the GOATs, so it was really cool.”

If O’Malley can prove that the doubters are wrong about Yang, it will unlock a whole new level of superstardom. He is currently the second-best bantamweight in the world, second only to the champion, and a win will almost certainly guarantee O’Malley a shot at defeating the winner of the Aljamain Sterling vs. T.J. Dillashaw title fight, which will also take place at UFC 280. So, when Oct.22 finally arrives, O’Malley thinks we’ll see his best performance yet.

“I wish this fight was in two weeks, I wish I was in Abu Dhabi right now, I wish it was a week of fighting! I wish I could fight in five days,” O’Malley said. “I am so excited about this opportunity. I believe Peter will bring the best out of me. I thought Pedro Munhos was going. People talk about this fight, it was blah blah blah. He never hit me. Let’s just say that things didn’t go his way. But I think Peter will help me better and it will be an exciting fight.”
