Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg’s status for 2023 ‘a mystery’

NEW YORK – Stephen StrasburgWashington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said his status for 2023 is up in the air after a series of injuries limited him to one start this season.

“It’s still a bit of a mystery,” Rizzo said of the 2019 World Series MVP before the national championships were due to doublehead at the New York Mets. “I know that he is working hard to strengthen his core and other parts of his body. We just have to see. The type of surgery and rehabilitation he underwent is unknown to us. Many people don’t know this. We will have to take it day by day.”

The 34-year-old right-hander threw a total of 31 1/3 innings in just eight starts over the past three seasons combined. He underwent carpal tunnel surgery in 2020 and required surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome in 2021.

After his only start in 2022, he returned to the list of injured ribs with a stress response.

“We’ll see where the rehab process takes us this winter,” Rizzo said. “We will keep an eye on him. He’s local, so we’ll see him all the time and see where he transitions into spring training mode.”

Strasbourg is a three-time All-Star and signed to a $245 million contract after helping Washington win the 2019 championship.

He’s 113-62 with a 3.24 career ERA.

Meeting with reporters at the end of a tough season – Washington entered the game with a 55-104 worst record in majors and nationals and kicked out the team’s best outfielder. John Sotoat the deadline of the deal – Rizzo talked about conducting an “autopsy of the organization.”

“I look at the season as a disappointment. I’ve always said that you are what you are on your track record, and our track record says we’re the worst team in the league right now. It’s hard to argue with that,” Rizzo said. “The flip side of that is that we’re in the process.”

Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez signed contract extensions during the season. Martinez said his entire coaching staff will be back next year.
