NBA free agency is underway, but the biggest storyline in the league right now is the future of Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant and where he will be traded.

Two-time NBA Finals MVP formally requested an exchangeand two of the team on his reported list of preferred destinations It’s the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns.

The big question here is what the Nets want in exchange for Durant. He is 34 years old, but when he is healthy, he remains one of the top three players in the world. There is a strong case to be made that Duran is in fact Best league player.

So the Nets’ return package for Durant could be historically large.

ESPN Brian Windhorst provided an update on this topic during a speech at the Sports Center.

“There are a number of teams that have made interesting offers,” Windhorst said. “From what I’ve been told, the Nets are telling teams they need a young star player and they’re looking for at least three first-round draft picks.”

Windhorst later added, “It seems to be the starting point you could start from: a star player and a lot of picks.”

The Nets could go in several different directions with the Durant trade. They could pursue assets for the future such as first round players and young players. They could also prioritize established veterans who could help Brooklyn fight in the Eastern Conference next season.

Brooklyn shouldn’t rush this process either. Durant has very little leverage because his four-year contract extension worth $194 million kicks off with the 2022-23 campaign. It’s not even close to free will. The Nets can take their time and study the situation before moving on to what they think is the best comeback possible.
