Auburn may now be playing quarterbacks, but that won’t stop the annual buzz in college football’s preseason rankings.
BUT new list Athlon Sports compiled a list of the top 14 quarterbacks in the SEC – one from each team – and decided to go with Auburn. Zach Causeway, who joined the SEC at Texas A&M last year. On the list, Calzada finished 12th, ahead of only Missouri’s Brady Cook and Vanderbilt’s Mike Wright. Here’s a little of what was said on the list when it came to Calzade compared to his rivals in the camp:
With Calzada, an A&M transfer from Texas who was sidelined with an injury, the spring didn’t offer much insight into Auburn’s quarterback’s wide-open battle… Finishing the game for 285 yards and three touchdowns in an upset against Alabama, Calzada threw for 2,185 yards and 17 points. for the entire year and 56.1 percent of his broadcasts. Ashford impressed with the spring game, but Calzada is probably the best option for Harsin.
Calzada is the most likely candidate to win the quarterback competition, but his stretch at A&M last year is certainly enough to cast doubt on Auburn fans. However, with Bo Nicks leaving for Oregon, a change is needed, and Calzada’s victory over Alabama represents the potential that any team in need of a signal player would want.
Trainer Brian Hars the winner of the quarterback contest has yet to be chosen, but whoever gets the job will make their debut against the Mercer Bears in Game 1 of Auburn on September 3rd.
