The Pittsburgh Steelers released their first official depth chart on Friday, and fans hoping to see rookie Kenny Pickett lead the team immediately may be disappointed. Pickett is listed as the team’s third quarterback after current starting Mitchell Trubisky and backup Mason Rudolph.

This probably shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Trubisky, who was signed by the team to a two-year contract during the off-season, was scheduled to open the season with the team’s starting lineup. Although the team selected Pickett in the first round, during training camp he received representatives from the third roster.

The most shocking thing is that Rudolf remains #2 on the team’s depth table. Rudolph, who was selected by the team in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, was unimpressed in his limited time in the NFL. In 10 starts, he threw 16 touchdowns to 10 interceptions. With the departure of Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers could have turned the case over to Rudolph, but the team decided to bring in Trubisky and waste the first-round pick on another quarterback.

Pickett’s place on the depth chart may disappoint some, but early depth charts don’t really matter much in the grand scheme of things. It’s still very early during training camp and players can go up and down as the games start.

Pickett’s third place on the depth chart doesn’t mean the Steelers consider him a loser. It probably says more about his inexperience in the NFL compared to Trubisky and Rudolph.

Kenny Pickett likely to start for Steelers in 2022

It is unlikely that Pickett will remain third in the depth chart for long. A spot on Rudolph’s roster might not be safe given the Steelers were looking to create competition in the offseason. If he has problems during the pre-season, Rudolf could be sacked or at least relegated to third in the depth table.

Trubisky looks set to open the season as a starter, but may not be able to keep that job. Trubisky has had a solid record in his NFL career, hitting 64 touchdowns to 38 interceptions, but his game leaves a lot to be desired. Despite these numbers, Trubisky didn’t get a starting opportunity last season, opting instead to back Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

There’s a scenario in which Trubisky lives up to his No. 2 draft status and has a great year with the Steelers. However, it is more likely that Trubisky is posting average numbers and the team ends up reaching out to Pickett.

Pickett’s place on the team’s first official depth chart probably doesn’t change that chart. Eventually he will get his opportunity. That won’t change because he’s listed as the team’s third quarterback on the depth chart in early August.
