NFL Week 3 Power Rankings: Tua Tagovailoa’s Dolphins may be for real; 49ers crack top 10 with Jimmy Garoppolo

There are those who can never admit they are wrong, some of whom I work with here at CBS Sports. (See: tall quarterback who played at Notre Dame.)

I’m not one of those who can’t admit they’re wrong.

So here it is: I think I might be wrong about Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Pay attention to the word could. The reason is that even after amazing performance with six touchdowns On Sunday, to rally the Dolphins with 21 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Baltimore Ravens 42-38 is just one game.

It certainly was a special performance, throwing for 469 yards and those six points, but it helped against the Ravens’ terrible defense. Having said all that, Tagovailoa was impressive. He picked open guys, made well-timed shots, seemed calm and cool while doing it, and had the air of a passer who may have just had a moment that would allow his career to take off.

But here’s the other side: let’s see him do it again this week against the Buffalo Bills. It doesn’t mean quitting for 400 and six points, but if he can go for 300 and two and win the game, now we’re on to something.

One game won’t change the story. But it helps. In a big way.

Tagovailoa did it on Sunday. That being said, his team is 2-0 as the Dolphins are ready for this monster game this week with Josh Allen and the Bills. The Dolphins climbed to #8 on my strength rankings, seven spots behind the top ranked Bills.

Once upon a time, Allen was like Tua, trying to prove his worth. Many doubted whether Allen could become a legitimate NFL starter, let alone a star. Many of these skeptics never admitted they were wrong.

If Tagovailoa wins the Bills and comes up with another amazing statistic, maybe that’s what I’m about to do.

It’s not that hard to say the wrong word.

Just now, judging by one game, is not the time, although it may come.

They left no doubt on Monday night against the Titans as to who the best team is right now. But now they are facing a serious road test in Miami in a short week. It won’t be easy.

Chiefs

They weren’t as clear on offense against the Chargers, but they still found a way. The defense made some huge moves in this game to win.

3

Buccaneers

The good news is that the defense was dominant. The bad news is that the offense, without some key elements, has only one touchdown in two games.

Eagles

As long as Jalen Hurts continues to play at a high level, he is a legitimate Super Bowl contender. The defense was better against Minnesota as well.

They went on the attack on the “bears”, which is a good sign. They’ll be fine on this side of the ball.

Charging device

They had their chances against the Chiefs, but they need to be better at closing games when they have the advantage. Justin Herbert’s rib injury is worth watching, especially in front of a good Jaguar defense.

They impressed the Falcons early on but made the game interesting by playing bad special teams. The defense needs to be better.

Dolphins

They are 2-0 and one of the first stories of the season this season. If they beat Billy this week it will be a much bigger story.

With Trey Lance out for a year with a broken ankle, it was time for Jimmy Garoppolo. He won a lot of games for this team so it was a wise decision to keep him.

The offense was good against Miami, but the defense was a disaster. They couldn’t take cover or hurry, which is a bad combination.

They did nothing on offense against the Eagles. Again, it was a Monday evening. We know how Kirk Cousins plays on Monday night.

Give them credit for fending off the Raiders as they faced 0-2 early on. Kyler Murray has achieved great success, which he had to do.

Broncos

They struggle on offense, but the defense has helped them out against the Texans. Russell Wilson needs to move up starting this week against the 49ers.

The offense still doesn’t work, but against the Steelers it’s enough thanks to good defensive play. There has been progress since 1 week.
