It has been another week of exciting action in the NHL as the trade deadline draws closer. While all the attention was focused off the ice, there were plenty of eye-popping moments worth revisiting.
Goal of the week
Guys, we have a goalkeeper goal! Linus Ulmark, already the presumed favorite for the Vezina Trophy, has added another feather to his bid for hockey’s most prestigious goaltending award. With the Vancouver Canucks empty on Saturday night, the Swedish goaltender went to great lengths to send the puck into a gaping cage, much to the delight of his teammates and fans across the NHL.
Salvation of the week
No matter the save of the week, this one might just be the save of the season. Take a closer look as Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Laurent Brossois, playing in just his third game of the season, does the unthinkable by completely depriving Tyler Seguin of a sure goal. Despite the valiant efforts of Brossois, who made 41 saves in this fight and increased his save percentage to a .936 intact, the Knights simply could not help their goaltender, losing the game in a shootout and further losing control of the Pacific Division.
Note of the week
It was a big heavyweight fight as Milan Lucic and Kurtis McDermid went head to head on Saturday night in an epic brawl. Lucic got the better of it with a hard right hand to send McDermid to the ice, but there’s no doubt this rivalry is far from over.
The duo have withdrawn four times already, starting with McDermid time in Los Angeles. But this one was especially epic.
Player of the Week: Linus Ulmark
When you score a goalkeeper goal, the first since 2020 and just now ninth to make it a shot on goal, you have earned the Player of the Week award. Even more impressive, however, was the goalkeeper that Ullmark showed off last week. With a couple of exceptional games against the New York Islanders and Canucks, Ullmark pushed his all-season save percentage to a mind-blowing .938, thanks in large part to his .966 save percentage last week.
Ulmark also became the first goalkeeper to score 30 wins this year. the fastest way to do it since Tiny Thompson almost a century ago. Suffice it to say, this week has been an unforgettable one for the undisputed No. 1 Bruins goaltender.
dish of the week
All Jack Hughes does is amazement as the Devils phenom has once again beaten a poor, unsuspecting quarterback. This time around, it’s the Philadelphia Flyers’ divisional contender who can’t hold back the first overall selection of 2019 as Hughes enters the slot, explores his options, and then puts the Flyers’ defense into a spin cycle to set up Jesper Bratt.
The 21-year-old’s breakout season was nothing short of magical, with an astounding 74 points in 55 games.
hands of the week
The back-o-frame was clearly all the rage this week, as Connor McDavid had his own moment of frenzy against the same Flyers on Tuesday. Look at the hands where McDavid deftly separates Flyers hitters at the top of the slot and almost does it himself in what would be a sure Goal of the Year candidate.
Week statistics
With a couple of assists against the New York Rangers on Monday night, Josh Morrisey led the Winnipeg Jets in single-season scoring by defensemen. Well, sort of. With its 57th point, Calgary, Alta. the native passed Dustin Bifullien for the most points in a season in Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets history for the blueliners.
However, considering the original Jets, Morrisey falls short of the 97 mark set in 1993 by Phil Houseley. So, is Morrisey the all-time leader in defensive scoring? I suppose it’s up to you.
Kraken Curse Reverse Retro
The reverse retro program has had its fair share of highlights and weaknesses, but with Adidas does not extend the deal with the NHL last summer, looks like it’s the end of the road for creative alternative jerseys. While many fans are no doubt hoping that their team’s gear will last for years to come, one team that is no doubt happy to let these things burn is the Seattle Kraken that is gone. no wins in four games in clothing inspired by the Seattle Iron Men.
The old man still has it
Who said old people don’t have it anymore? Craig Anderson was at the top of his game earlier this week, becoming the oldest goaltender in NHL history to make 50 saves in a game during the Sabres’ 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers. This year has been a revelation for Anderson, who nearly ended his career in the offseason. He was instrumental in providing the Sabers with a reliable network that put them in the thick of the wild card race.
Between 2 stalls
If you have time, do yourself a favor and watch this four and a half minute video from the Sabers. This is not a place on an NHL team’s social media, this is a place in a museum. Absolutely amazing.
coyote legends
Arizona went back to the salary cap scam again as it acquired Shea Weber (contract) from the Golden Knights in exchange for Dyson Mayo and also won back a late-round pick. Weber joins the illustrious roster of Yotes alumni, as well as a hypothetically elite circa 2010 team made up of guys who have long since retired from the game due to injury. That’s it Coyotes need a goalkeeperand i have just a man to work.
Quote of the week
Louis Blues head coach Craig Berube went on a hell of a tirade this week as his team continued to slide down the standings, gutting their core during the press conference. When you’re throwing words like “passion” and “emotion” around while players are actively attacking you, you know things are going to go bad quickly.
“Fire, Hextall!”
In the midst of a 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins fans were desperate for Ron Hextall and his club management. Sitting outside the playoffs and looking like they could miss for the first time since Crosby’s rookie season, Penguins fans at the PPG Paints Arena screamed and made it crystal clear who their target was.
Willie Stiles
William Nylander put an exclamation mark on what became a breakout season, the OT winner’s incredible solo effort on Friday night. Note the one-handed stick lift that leaves Freddie Gaudreau wondering where the puck went before Nylander takes Matthew Baldy out for a walk and then cashes in to the winner to seal Toronto’s 2-1 win.

There’s no question that Brad Marchand and the officials probably have a complicated relationship, but it’s certainly a new one. Watch this game in the corner on Saturday night when Marchand picks up the puck in the offensive zone and then compares him… Wes McCauley? To be fair, McCauley himself is no fool, having played four years of college hockey and was even drafted in 1990 by the Detroit Red Wings.
Even more insanely, just six picks later, the Washington Capitals would select future 50-goal scorer Peter Bondru with the 156th pick overall. Look, only one of these dudes is skating the NHL ice in 2023, so it’s impossible to say whose pick was better.
The rafters
It was an unforgettable night in the Bay Area on Saturday when Patrick Marleau became the first San Jose Shark to have his jersey retired. The Sharks’ all-time leader in goals, points and games played was well deserving of credit and shed a few tears as No. 12 was raised to the ceiling of the SAP Center. There’s no doubt that the Saskatchewan native’s next stop should be the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Excellent mittens
As creatures of habit, it’s probably not the easiest experience to get a feel for all your new gear. only immediately after the exchange. So Garnet Hathaway decided to take matters into his own hands — literally, in fact — and spray-painted his old Capitals gloves to make sure they were perfect for his first Black and Gold game with ” Bruins.”
Mask
While Spencer Knight recently retired from the ice for personal reasons, the Panthers’ netback managed to show off his new mask before getting help, and damn it’s great. Knight teamed up with the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to create this beauty, which features drawings of him and the kids in the hospital. taken during his visit.
Trending: Colorado Avalanche
Sleep on the reigning Stanley Cup champions at your own risk. The Avalanche is red-hot, has passed the Jets on home ice in the Central Division and is quickly climbing to pole position with games in hand. With five straight wins, the Aves have only suffered one regular-game loss in their last 10 games, losing 5-0 to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and are entering certified van territory.
Perhaps most impressively, most of this victory was achieved without Cale Makar, who suffered a couple of concussions last month and missed several games. However, when the current Norris Trophy winner returns, be careful because we may see a lot more burgundy and blue during the playoffs.
Down trending: St. Louis Blues
Blues is a complete mess. Not that we’re tracking or anything, but…
