You may have realized that the NHL season starts in less than two weeks. From 1998 to 2016, there was no Stanley Cup champion in the NHL for 18 years. However, things have changed in the last half century. The Pittsburgh Penguins won two consecutive championships in 2016 and 2017. The Lightning have won the Cup in 2020 and 2021. Players expect the recent trend of two league titles to continue this year.

The Colorado Avalanche opened the 2021-22 season as a betting favorite to win the Stanley Cup. They went 56-19-7 in the regular season, finishing with the best record in the Western Conference and the second-best record in the NHL, behind only the Florida Panthers.

Dominance continued into the playoffs as Colorado lost just four games in four best-of-seven series en route to winning the Stanley Cup. It has been a dominant season for the Avalanche and they have been very deserving champions.

As the 2022-2023 season approaches, the Avalanche is once again the clear favorite to win the Stanley Cup. Colorado is currently +425 to win it all at BetMGM. No other team has better odds than 8-to-1. These short odds do not stop players from supporting Avalanche. Overall, more than 22% of bets and almost 34% of the money secure Colorado to win the Stanley Cup. No other team in the league receives more than 9% stakes or more than 13% stakes.

The Avalanche may still be the most talented team in the league, but they lost a few key elements in the offseason. Nazem Kadri had 87 points last season but is now a Calgary Flames player. Andre Burakovsky’s 61 points are now in Seattle. Darcy Kemper had the fifth-best save percentage in the league during the regular season but will now be between the pipes for the Washington Capitals.

Online, the Avalanche will play a platoon of Pavel Frantzouz and newly acquired Alexander Georgiev, whom they poached from the New York Rangers in the offseason. Last season, Georgiev acted as an understudy for Igor Shesterkin, posting a .898 shooting percentage.

Ahead, Colorado expects Alex Newhook to take a major step in his development. The 2019 first round pick scored 33 points in 71 games last year in his rookie season. This year, he will be tasked with filling part of the production that went to Kadri and Burakovsky. The Avalanche also signed Evan Rodriguez to add some hurt.

It’s still a team with elite forward talent in Nathan McKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog. They have the best defensive unit in the league with Cale Makar, Devon Toews, Bowen Byram and Samuel Girard. They showed in the playoffs last year that they needed nothing more than an average shot to win. If there’s a team that can handle the loss of two 60-point forwards and their starting goaltender, it’s Colorado.

Rangers is a popular bet in the East

The New York Rangers were an unexpected team last season. Entering this season, there are expectations. New York went all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals last season and the players want them to be even better this season.

The Rangers are the second most popular bet to win the Stanley Cup at BetMGM. So far, they have received 9% of the stakes and 13% of the money in the betting market. The Rangers are 18-to-1 to win it all. Those odds are equal to Calgary, Minnesota, Vegas and Pittsburgh, who are seventh in the league.

The Rangers are the most popular bet to win in the Eastern Conference, accounting for nearly 21% of bets and over 24% of bets. New York +900 to win the conference, which shares fifth place with Pittsburgh in odds. Toronto, Florida, Carolina and Tampa Bay have the best odds.

Of course, the Rangers are going the same way as Igor Shesterkin, so some people may not believe New York. Shesterkin was phenomenal last season, winning the Vezina Trophy and leading the league in save percentage, above-expected goals saved and by a wide margin. He a bet on the favorite to win Vezina this season at odds of +250.

However, the chances that Shesterkin will repeat his last year’s result are small. This is not a blow to Shesterkin, but rather a recognition of how extraordinary his performance was last season. The second-best goaltender in the league last season had a .925 shooting percentage, 10 points short of Shesterkin. The chances of him having a great all-time season are slim.
