NHL playoff standings update: Wild, Jets continue battle for Central Division spots

Both the Minnesota Wild and the Winnipeg Jets seem to be on their way to the playoffs. FiveThirtyEight predicts the Wilds have a 93% playoff chance and the Jets have a 65% chance.

With the Western Conference playoff race in chaos, these two prairie clubs could very well be the ones to battle as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds representing the Central Division in the first round.

Tonight’s game (7:30 a.m. ET, available via NHL Power Play on Sportzshala+) is the third of four games this season between the two teams. Minnesota handily won both previous matches (6-1 on November 23 and 4-1 on December 27).

Will there be any changes to adding the Jets deadline? Or will the Scavs still own their northern neighbors? Tonight there will be another clue in the slowly unraveling mystery of the Central Seeding race.

With the final stretch of the regular season ahead, it’s time to check out all of the playoff races, as well as the teams vying for a spot in the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery.

Note. Playoff chances are determined by FiveThirtyEight.

Race for Choice #1

The NHL uses a draft lottery to determine order at the start of the first round, so the last-placed team is not guaranteed a #1 pick. As of 2021, a team can move up a maximum of 10 positions if they win the lottery, so only 11 teams are eligible for the #1 pick draw. Full details of the process can be found here. This summer, Connor Bedard sits on the No. 1 draft board, who is praised as the talent of a generation.
