Now that the trade deadline has passed, the race for the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs is starting in earnest. Every day until the last day of the regular season, we’ll update you with an updated standings and playoff predictions, game schedule, last night’s scores, and current draft picks, with Connor Bedard as the prize for the team that wins. No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft.
But first of all, let’s talk today about the race for two seats in the Western Conference.
After Sunday’s game, the Colorado Avalanche moved up to third in the Central Division with 74 points, while the Winnipeg Jets fell back to second. The first place with a wild-card is occupied by the Edmonton Oilers (76 points).
Tonight, the Oilers will pay a visit to the Buffalo Sabers in a game exclusively on Sportzshala+ and Hulu as the Oilers continue to fight for a place in the Pacific Division seed, or at least a wild card. The Jets will play the San Jose Sharks.
The Nashville Predators, who traded Matthias Ekholm, Tanner Jannot, Nino Niederreiter and Mikael Granlund, are six points behind the Winnipeg ahead of today’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. FiveThirtyEight gives them a 38% chance of making the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Flames, who won the Pacific Division title last season before the summer roster rollover, are seven points behind with a 15 percent chance of making the playoffs. Tonight they will play the Dallas Stars, a club looking to cement their first-place position in the Central Division.
Ahead of the final stretch of the 2022-2023 regular season, it’s time to check out all of the playoff races, as well as the teams vying for spots in the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery.
Note. Playoff chances are determined by FiveThirtyEight.

Race for Choice #1
The NHL uses a draft lottery to determine order at the start of the first round, so the last-placed team is not guaranteed a #1 pick. As of 2021, a team can move up a maximum of 10 positions if they win the lottery, so only 11 teams are eligible for the #1 pick draw. Full details of the process can be found here. This summer, Connor Bedard sits on the No. 1 draft board, who is praised as the talent of a generation.
