HALL, Germany. No. 1 ranked Daniil Medvedev defeated Ilya Ivashka for the second time in a week, beating the Belarusian 7-6(4), 6-3 on Thursday to advance to the quarter-finals at the Halle Open.
Medvedev, who also eliminated Ivashka in ‘s-Hertogenbosch last week, saved three set points, trailing 5-4 in the first set.
This week, Medvedev returned to first place in the rankings, and Novak Djokovic fell to third place, and admitted that this could add motivation to his rivals in Halle.
“Some will be a little intimidated by the fact that they are playing with the first racket of the world and they have a difficult draw. If they lose, maybe nothing special,” Medvedev said. “Some are the opposite. Maybe they don’t have the best confidence at the moment, and if they beat the world number one, then everything will start.
Medvedev will then face seventh-placed Roberto Bautista Agut, who beat qualifier Tallon Greekspur 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-2.
No. 8 seeded Karen Khachanov and Oskar Otte of Germany also moved forward.
Khachanov beat Laszlo Jere 7-6 (4), 6-4, while Otte rallied and defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (3).
