Notre Dame just outside top four in CBS 1-131 preseason poll

In college football these days, the goal is to be in the top four by the end of the regular season. How you get there is not as important as the fact that you do it and that it earns you a place in the College Football playoffs.

To date, Notre Dame has received a CFP spot twice and if all goes well, it could earn a third spot this season. However, this fall, Notre Dame’s schedule will see some of the best programs in all of college football.

Chip Patterson of CBS Sports published his 1-131 college football pre-season poll and had Notre Dame just outside of that all-important top four as they finished in sixth place. Perhaps just as important, Notre Dame’s two rivals for 2022 are ahead of the Irish, as are Clemson tested in the fifth and Ohio second.

Patterson put USC 12th, BYU just outside the top 25 at 26th, and then 2022 Notre Dame opponents didn’t reappear until North Carolina registered at 46.

The remaining opponents of Notre Dame in 2022 ranked as follows:

55. Boston College
71. Stanford
75. Cal
76. Marshall
89. Syracuse
103. Navy
116. UNLV

It’s very hard, as you can tell, but at the same time quite manageable. Even with a loss at Ohio State to open the year, Notre Dame’s talent should be good enough to win 10 games, if not more, this regular season.

And if it’s more, then it will be hard for the authorities to keep Notre Dame out of the CFP with an 11-1 mark against the likes of Ohio State, Clemson, USC and BYU.
