The 2022 World Cup is taking place in the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar, and as the group stage continues, we have witnessed unexpected setbacks and new contenders, but there is still a long way to go before tournament champions are decided at the end of December.

Along the way, viewers have already seen how most matches have been affected, at least to some degree, by VAR technology when it comes to penalty kicks, ball possession and, often, offside decisions. Following the introduction of semi-automatic offside technology at the 2018 World Cup in Russia this summer, FIFA announced that the tool would return to the tournament this year. Read on to find out how offside works and how VAR technology is being used to make decisions in the 2022 World Cup.

What is the offside rule?

A player is in an offside position when he is in the opponent’s half of the field and any part of his head, body or legs is “closer to the opponent’s goal line than the ball and the penultimate opponent”. In other words, the player must be fully in front of the last defender when his teammate passes the ball to him. The offside rule exists to ensure that players do not linger at the opponent’s goal trying to exploit scoring opportunities.

The offside rule does not apply when a player receives the ball directly from a corner kick, throw-in or goal kick.

What is VAR?

By now, the acronym, familiar to all fans of year-round leagues like the Premier League, stands for Video Assistant Referee. This applies to off-field officials who are watching the match with access to multiple cameras, angles and data points, as well as slow-motion replay, who can weight decisions including goals and penalties to make refereeing more accurate. .

How will technology affect offsides at the 2022 World Cup?

In Qatar, FIFA uses several forms of VAR technology to assist officials in determining offsides. This includes 12 tracking cameras continuously collecting data on the position of each player’s limbs, as well as “connected ball technology”, a sensor inside the official ball that sends data on the detection of the point of impact to the video operations room. For FIFA, “By combining limb and ball tracking data and applying artificial intelligence, the new technology provides an automatic offside alert to video match officials in the video operations room whenever the ball is received by an offensive player who was in an offside position. the moment the ball was played by a team-mate.”

After the video referee and on-field officials confirm the decision, a 3D visualization of the offside penalty is available to clearly communicate the offence.

South Korea and Ghana face off in Group H and both teams consider this game mandatory to win in an incredibly tight group.

Heung-min Son & Co were very reliable against Uruguay in the first leg but only created a couple of big chances in the 0-0 draw. It is at this point that Son really needs to take the initiative and stand out as they will play Portugal in the final match of the group stage and will want to have four points on the board by then.

It was very unfortunate for Ghana to lose to Portugal in a five-goal thriller as the Black Stars were a lot of fun to watch and nearly pulled out a 3-3 draw late on, but Inaki Williams slipped at the crucial moment.

Key storylines, players to keep an eye on

Clearly, Heung Min Sung is the main player in South Korea and on the other side of the field they need Kim Min Jae to keep the defense together. It will be interesting to see if South Korea launches a few more of their playmakers in this clash as they look to take the game to Ghana. With Uruguay, they played very strongly for a draw in order to set themselves up for this game.

For Ghana, it will be very similar to how they played against Portugal, but they will look less open in counter-attacks on defense. They will sit back and counterattack, and the key to success is moving Mohammed Kudus forward. Both Ghana and South Korea will see this as a game they need to win to have a chance of finishing in the bottom 16, but Ghana could get a draw and then create a potential winner to take the whole game against Uruguay in the Group H final.
