The Portland Trail Blazers are a team to watch ahead of the 2022 NBA draft Thursday night. They have the seventh overall pick but are actively looking for a veteran who could help them win now. One potential target is Toronto Raptors forward O.G. Anunobi. according to Chris Haynes.

After Damian Lillard underwent abdominal surgery last season, the Blazers went full tank for the first time in nearly a decade. They traded nearly every notable player on the roster, including CJ McCollum, Larry Nance Jr., Robert Covington and Norman Powell, and finished the season 2–21.

But despite all these moves, the Blazers never planned a long-term rebuild. Not now that Lillard is still around and nearing the end of his heyday. They saw the writing on the wall and knew that even with a healthy Lillard, the old lineup wasn’t good enough to compete in the Western Conference. Instead, they hope to rebuild around Lillard and immediately compete again. Lottery luck might help in this regard, but picking #7 should still bring in a solid income.

Whether they can actually get Anunobi remains to be seen – they may have to offer more than just pick #7 – but there is there were rumors that the forward hasn’t always been thrilled with his role with Toronto, and the Raptors may want to part ways with him given his injury history and their many wings.

If the Blazers can make a deal with Anunobi, it will be great business. Anunobi is an amazing defender and would be one of the best players the Blazers have had on this side of the ball in a while. He will single-handedly improve what has been a vulnerable defense for many years. On offense, he has developed into a solid three-point shooter and averaged 17.1 points per game last season.

The only real blow to Anunobi is that he can’t stay on the court. He played 91 games in the last two seasons combined and only once reached the 70-game mark in his career. But given his age and talent, it’s worth the risk if they can rip him off the Predators.

Regardless of what happens to Anunobi, it’s clear that the Blazers are aiming for large, versatile wings paired with Lillard. On Wednesday, they made their first big addition off-season, trading a 2025 first-round pick to the Detroit Pistons for Jerami Grant.
