On Wednesday, the team announced that the New England Patriots are resurrecting their red uniforms.

New England wore this uniform as a throwback to the 2002 season after the team’s first Super Bowl triumph in the 2001 campaign. Since then, the Patriots have used the uniform (and period-appropriate variations of it) in the 2009–2012 seasons before the NFL’s one-shell rule made it impossible for the club to look like a throwback starting in the 2013 season.

The league’s move away from the one-shell rule opened the door for the return of this (and many others) outdated uniforms, much to the delight of aesthetically minded fans. Pat the Patriot, always ready to flip the ball, is back on the side of the New England Helmets with white masks.

The uniform also features a detail that links the franchise to its past: tri-color shoulder patches. The Patriots first revived this detail in their Color Rush uniforms for the 2016 season and then made it a permanent part of their attire with a uniform change for the 2020 season.

The same shoulder patches can be traced back to the club’s first year, 1960, when the team was known as the Boston Patriots of the American Football League.

The Patriots last wore this kit as a permanent uniform in the 1990 season, and then changed the team’s face mask color from white to red in 1991, a look that lasted through the 1992 season. New England then entered a minor aesthetic identity crisis, first switching from the Pat Patriot team logo to the current emblem for the 1993 season, while at the same time embarking on a string of clothing changes, moving to blue jerseys and silver pants as the main look when changing. trouser stripes and number colors (and later number font style) throughout much of the 1990s. At the turn of the century, the Patriots officially switched from the brighter blue to the navy blue that has become a New England mainstay ever since.

Prior to the switch to blue in 1993, New England had long functioned as a red-dominated club. This shade will return with a return kit, as will everyone’s favorite Pat Patriot. The Patriots are hoping a return to their past will coincide with a return to NFL prominence after they secured a spot in the 2021 campaign.
