Although he is officially listed as a wide receiver on the Patriots’ website, running back coach Vinny Sunseri said that Montgomery worked in the backfield this offseason. Logic dictates that from this place he will see some action as a pass catcher.

“An extremely intelligent footballer,” Sunseri said. “He does everything you ask him to do, he gets all sorts of information. And so far it has been a pleasure to work with him. He works very hard every single day. And he’s a very smart guy. boy.”

The Green Bay Packers’ original third-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft saw his best season in 2016 when he recorded 805 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns, acting primarily as a running back. New England didn’t invite Montgomery to feature him on offense, but the 29-year-old will be part of the stable of runners that Bill Belichick loves to use. It will also benefit special teams.
