Penn State names Deion Barnes defensive line coach

As Penn State gears up for the start of spring football training, the search for a new defensive line coach has officially come to an end. On Monday, Penn State announced Deion Barnes will take on a role on the coaching staff.

“We are delighted that Deion is representing his alma mater as the coach of our defensive line,” the head coach said. James Franklin said in a released statement. “I was really impressed with how he has grown as a coach and leader over the last three seasons. Deyon’s passion for Pennsylvania and the defensive line room was a hallmark. It is clear to me that he is proud of this university because of his work.”

Barnes, a former linebacker for Penn State from 2012 to 2014, spent the last three seasons on the Pennsylvania coaching staff as an alumnus assistant. During this time he helped develop Arnold Ebiketi, Jessie Luketa, Odafe OveAnd Shaka Tony. All four have been drafted by NFL teams, including Oveh, who was selected in the first round of the Baltimore Ravens draft in 2021.

“I am thrilled and proud to be my alma mater’s defensive line coach,” Barnes said in a released statement. “I am extremely grateful to Coach Franklin for giving me the opportunity to lead a group of wonderful young people who work so hard every day. I am very proud and proud of Pennsylvania State University and I am very happy to work with this coaching staff, this team, my Letterman brothers and the best college football fans.”

Barnes to join coaching staff previously held by John Scott Jr.who left the program for an opportunity with the Detroit Lions.

Penn State opens spring football practice on Tuesday, March 14th. The Blue and Whites’ annual spring game is scheduled for Saturday, April 15th.
